I created a series of animations for the BBC literacy series “Fun With Phonics” and was then asked to illustrate the accompanying 42 book series that followed. Pressure of work at the time meant that I shared the load with animator Ashley Davidson who had worked for me on the TV series. I illustrated 26 books and was able to be editorially involved in the scheme right from the start. It was published by Pearson.
The reading scheme was designed to teach children to read using the Synthetic Phonics method. This meant that the first 9 books were written using only 6 letters! I created a nuclear family of crocodiles and a group of birds to relate stories with limited vocabulary.
